On this grey November morning I am happy to share On this grey November morning I am happy to share episode 9️⃣ with you - which I recorded a couple of weeks ago in sunny Lisbon 😍🌞

For this episode I spoke to Catarina, who is a PhD student at the University of Lisbon. Catarina conducts research on apple orchards 🍎 and vineyards πŸ‡and how their fertilisation can be made more sustainable.
In the case of orchards - by integrating animal manure πŸ– into fertilisation schemes.
& in the case of vineyards - by using satellite images to see which parts of the vineyards don't receive enough nutrients.
Happy listening πŸ‘‚ and have good week : )

The agreed upon language in science is English. The agreed upon language in science is English.

We speak English during conferences , write English in our manuscripts and think English during meetings.

While this is really practical because it allows all of us to communicate with each other, it still makes a big part of many of us disappear.
Many PhD students, including myself, have a first language that is a big part of our identity.

When I try explaining what I do in my PhD in German it often sounds rather awkward because I am lost in finding matching German equivalent words. At the same time, I sometimes miss English equivalents in the English language cosmos for German terms.

Most of our family members are not able to read our final dissertations or the articles we publish – which is really a pity for them and for us!

To give more languages room, the PhD students I interview first introduce themselves in their first language before we continue with English. That allows them to show another side of them, relate with people who speak that same language and to maybe say Hi to their grandma & grandpaπŸ₯°

Being a podcast addict 🎧myself I absolutely wan Being a podcast addict 🎧myself I absolutely wanted a great jingle 🎼for my podcast.

Unfortunately – or luckily – those cannot be bought in supermarkets..?!
So, where to get one?
Yes, there is pages like fiverr and such but all that didn’t feel quite right.

After days of mentally going through the people I know and their various talents – it struck me that I happen to have a piano teacher 🎹, who happens to also be a composer of music I really like!😊
When the next lesson came up, I was sure to ask but then thought: really? Could it be an insult for a composer to ask for jingle? Not knowing either business very well…
Off I went – without having gotten anywhere.

But the following lesson I took my courage and told myself that a question is unlikely to ruin our relationship. And it turned out – she got super excited! Which also made me feel even more excited!
Weeks, e-mails, and meetings later I got a beautiful jingle that is just a perfect match – for me and the podcast. 😍

& while you cant listen to my podcast jingle yet – you can very much listen to GenfΓ€rd already!

Get your headphones and enjoy!
